Long Beach is such an incredible place to live. From the amazing parks to incredible community activities - could it be more idyllic? If you are looking for support through a coach, counselor, therapist, or psychologist, I would like to help!

I want to help you find a therapist in Long Beach

But where to even start? There are SO many therapists. From the endless lists on Psychology Today to Betterhelp what do you even look for? How do you find a competent, caring, helping professional?

Here is a quick list of tips to help narrow the search:

Tip #1: Are they a licensed mental health professional?

In much of the United States there is no title protection for counselors, therapists, and other mental health professionals. What does this mean? ANYONE can call themselves a professional whether or not they have had the training and experience to become competent in this field. When a person is a licensed mental health professional (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, etc) that individual has literally gone through thousands of hours providing treatment under the supervision of a competent, licensed individual. They have also undergone hundreds of hours of training and supervision to develop their skills. Lastly, they have passed a very difficult competency test issued by their state’s board of behavioral sciences proving their competency to work ethically and within the law.

Tip #2: Does your therapist meet your specific needs?

Just because a person is licensed does not mean they actually are knowledgeable in what you may need help with. Therapy is a very nuanced practice, which allows space for therapists to find niches to specialize in. Have you found an individual who has furthered their training and expertise in the niche you need help with so you can have the best, most effective change in your life?

Tip #3: Does it feel like a good fit?

I once met with a client who transferred to me because their prior therapist started slurping down yogurt while they were opening up about their life trauma. Needless to say, this was not a good fit for that individual. It may seem vague, but therapy is based on a trusting relationship between the client and therapist. When we ask “does it feel like a good fit?” we are asking does your gut tell you this is a comfortable, easy, and trustworthy person to meet with? Do you feel heard, seen, and understood? Are you actually making progress and change in your life with the support of your therapist? While no one is perfect, there are better therapeutic fits between client and therapist than others. Make sure your therapist, from the first contact, is the right fit for your healing journey.
