Frequently Asked Questions About Counseling in the Lakewood, CA
Who knew when you started googling find a therapist near me that you would find so many options, and be left with SO many questions? I am here to help!
How do counseling sessions typically last?
Individual counseling sessions are 50 minutes and couples sessions are 80 minutes.
What happens during the first counseling session?
The first session for individuals is focused on getting to know each other and understanding where I can best help. You will spend time sharing about what is bringing you to therapy and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
For couples, we follow the Gottman Method, which includes an Oral History Intake Interview. I have a set of 13 questions I ask every couple to have a better understanding of your history together and personal values in a relationship.
How do I know if I (or my child) really need counseling?
Life is always full of obstacles. Good questions to ask when determining if counseling is needed are, “How do these obstacles impair my life? Is whatever I am struggling with impacting me occupationally, educationally, physically, or interpersonally?” Basically, can I still function at a healthy and fulfilling level? If not, it may be time to start exploring help to get you back to where you want to be with the help of a professional.
How often will I need to come to counseling?
Counseling is on a weekly basis. Research has found that consistent, weekly treatment is more effective than spaced-out or irregular treatment. As you progress we will work together to reduce sessions and transition back to life without counseling.
How long will I need to come to counseling?
The length of counseling depends solely on the unique needs and goals of the client. On average, counseling lasts 9 months for clients to reach their optimum level of functioning. This may, however, be shorter or longer depending on your personal needs.
How much do sessions cost?
50-minute individual sessions cost $200
80-minute couples sessions cost $300
Are sessions covered by my insurance?
At this time I accept insurance with Optum, and Aetna. I am able to provide a superbill (a receipt for services) for clients not in these networks with a PPO plan upon request. These may be submitted for potential reimbursement from insurance plans by clients. Please make sure to check with your insurance if services would be reimbursable.
How do I seek reimbursement from my insurance company?
Reach out to your particular insurance providers to clarify the process for reimbursement. You are also able to work with companies such as Mentaya to assist with this process.
Do you have evening and weekend appointments available?
At this time I do not work on weekends. My latest evening slots end are from 5-6 pm and I see clients Monday thru Thursday.
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions take place online or over the phone. I encourage clients to meet in a space where they are comfortable and have privacy.
Who do you work with?
I specialize in working with individuals with anxiety, mothers in the postpartum and prenatal stages, and couples seeking to heal and strengthen their relationships.
What if counseling isn't working?
We will periodically assess for progress within treatment. If counseling is not working we can work together to find a referral to the right type of counseling for you. The most important thing about counseling is to help you make progress.
